I've been saving up for a while, and I'm about halfway to the point to where I could open up shop. I took a lot of business courses in college, but are there any pointers anyone here has for novice comic-store owners (which apply specifically to such a shop)? We'll probably sell some regular books, tabletop games&books, as well as some video games and DVDs.

if your going to do that then separate each thing, the comics from and game and movie ect. One thing that will really help your business is tournaments yu-gi-oh, pokemon ect. also keep up with trades most comic shops i go to don't have a great selection of trades.

I still play Pokemon; they have a big tournament at the mall each Saturday evening... I'm 20, but I'm not the oldest person there by far. Also, thanks for the advice. I'm probably going to have a large area set up just for card games, tabletop games, whatever. If you and your bros want to come in and just play Shadowrun for a couple of hours every Tuesday, that's cool. I know I'd sell LOTS of books and cards that way; that's how the LCS I go to works, anywho.

well the big thing to remeber is you have to be in an area that wants/needs a comic shop setting up in a mall would be ideal and having it as your second job is what a lot of people including my local owner have to resort to to keep the shop up and going like said above its also big to bring in weekly gaming this gaurantees sales and a crowd in your shop but this also brings in a lot of people that wont buy anything thats why its a good idea to stock snacks and soda in your shop back issues are important but dont forget to carry a wide variety of new issues last time I was in Nashville I went to 4 comic shops only one carried jonah hex another thing is figures we comic fans want them and having a back supply of figures will set your shop out from most theirs a place outside of pigeon forge Tennesee called s and g comics cards and collectibles that I always stop by for the insane ammount of older as well as newer toys they have not to mention the variety thereof Space is important everything crammed in one area will make your shop unappealing and always make sure to display statuettes posters ect. in plain sight to provoke intrest in characters/events
